E-Liquid Nicotine Strengths Explained: Salt vs Freebase

By Aussie Vape Team · 24 June 2026

If you use a refillable pod system, choosing an e-liquid means picking a nicotine strength and a type. Here is what the numbers mean. Browse all e-liquids and nicotine salts.

What does mg/mL mean?

Nicotine strength is shown in milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL). A higher number delivers more nicotine per puff; a lower number, less. Nicotine-free options are also available. If you are unsure, start lower — you can move up if it is not enough.

Nicotine salt vs freebase

Nicotine salt is smoother at higher strengths, which is why it is common in pod systems and disposables. Freebase nicotine gives a stronger throat hit and is often used at lower strengths in bigger devices. Many flavours come in both.

Matching e-liquid to your device

Low-power pod systems generally pair with higher-strength nicotine salts, while higher-power devices suit lower-strength freebase. Check what your device is designed for. New to refillables? See our pod systems and beginners guide.
